ONE of the most popular musicals of modern times is to make its first visit to The Lowry at Salford Quays later this month.
Based on the Academy Award-winning film, Fame The Musical follows a group of eager and talented students from their first audition to graduation.
Romances and friendships develop as the story makes a social statement that is relevant to today's youth. The highs and lows are too much for some, but these kids are determined to live forever and ultimately tragedy and triumph combine in a spectacular finale that has prompted standing ovations across the world.
Since its West End première Fame has established itself as one of the Britain's most successful theatrical productions. It has been seen by more than 3.5 million people and grossed more than £60m in the UK alone. More than 5,000 hopefuls have auditioned for the show, which employs 100 people at any one time.
The original High School for the Performing Arts, on which the show is based, boasts a strong list of graduates, including Jennifer Aniston, Liza Minnelli, Al Pacino, Suzanne Vega and Eartha Kitt.Its success has made it a model for a number of schools, including the Brit School in Croydon and the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, founded by Sir Paul McCartney.
Nominated for two Olivier awards - Best New Musical and Best Choreography - Fame The Musical has received a host of glowing reviews. The Mail on Sunday said it was 'a feel-good triumph', while The Independent described it as 'absolutely breathtaking... the energy is astounding'.
