Budding stars bid for the lead role in RTÉ's Fame the Musical

The search for the new stars of hit stage show Fame the Musical is underway, as hopefuls from all over the country were auditioned in recent weeks. Budding performers are in a bid to win the male and female lead in Fame The Musical, the process of which will feature in a 10 week TV series on RTÉ One in April.

The show is to be presented by Derek Mooney and leading the search and putting the hopefuls through their paces at the auditions were actor and director Simon Delaney, stage producer Robert C Kelly and West End star Jacinta Whyte, who stared in Annie the Musical when she was 12.

Those who successfully wowed the judges at the recent auditions will be put through to Fame School, an intense workshop phase where performers are put through their paces, and where it will be decided who will go through to the live TV shows and battle it out over eight weeks, on the Helix stage, live in front of the nation. Joining the panel for live shows will be Erica Gimpel, who starred as "Coco Hernandez" in the original "Fame" TV series. Only two performers will be crowned the winners and take their pride of place in the nationwide tour of Fame The Musical.

Fame star Erica visited Ireland in January encouraging hopefuls to apply online. Out of the thousands of applications received, hundreds of performers were auditioned at locations in Dublin, Cork and London, with those who have been short-listed appearing on the RTÉ show over 10 weeks as they battle it out to win the lead roles.

According to Larry Bass, CEO of Screentime ShinAwiL which is producing the show for RTÉ: 'Fame is set to be the ultimate family show and a great opportunity to give one boy and one girl a real career in musical theatre by launching one of Ireland's biggest ever musical theatre productions.'
