We went along to the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury last night (26 November) with much anticipation, me to relive my youth, my daughter to see Jorgie Porter from the much acclaimed Hollyoaks. Let me just say, leave with extra time there are roadworks just outside Aylesbury, you don’t want to miss the show!

Firstly, don’t go to this show thinking you will hear a medley of tunes from the original movie from back in the day. These guys have very much made the story modern and their own, with a whole new batch of tunes. As are the characters, gone are Doris, Coco, Leroy, Bruno and gang, refreshingly replaced with Carmen, Tyrone, Iris, Mabel, Schlomo to name but a few.

The backstory remains loosely based on the original, youngsters attending a Performing Arts School all wanting to be stars. The dancing was amazing, loved, loved, loved so many of the numbers. Definitely a highlight was the Fame original tune performed with a Mexican twist, which was quite simply amazing. Stephanie Rojas as Carmen, outstanding voice, could listen to her all night alone. As musicals go, they all sang and danced their hearts out from start to finish. Special mention to the cheeky Jamal Kane Crawford, his solo number another standout moment and his personality just shone through when on stage, he’s one to watch out for.

Last but not least the amazingly talented Mica Paris as Miss Sherman, her voice vastly under used during the show, but when she does sing, just wow, this lady has the most amazing voice and I would look forward to seeing her perform again and again. By the time they all came out for the finale, we were all on our feet singing Fame with the cast, I’m still humming remember my name… Fame… grab a ticket I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, it’s pretty fabulous.
