Spring Awakening 's Groff to Reshoot Gun-Related "One Life to Live" Role

Spring Awakening Jonathan Groff's role as a teen who brought a gun to school in the soap opera "One Life to Live" is being reworked in light of the shootings at Virginia Tech, the Daily News reports.

"One Life to Live" has pulled scenes from 17 episodes that featured the character, Henry, taking a gun to Llanview High School. The show is rewriting, retaping and reediting the episodes so that the same story — involving a car accident — will be told with the same characters, with Henry as the main character of the story but without a gun brought to school.

"Out of respect for those affected by this devastating tragedy, I felt that it was important to remove this story line from our show," executive producer Frank Valentini told the paper. "I'm not sure how we're going to do it, but we're figuring that out now." About Groff, Valentini said, "We went to great lengths not only to get him, but to work around his schedule…We're lucky that we were able to get him again and are able to reshoot the story with him."

Jonathan Groff made his Broadway debut in the short-lived musical In My Life . He played Rolf in the national tour of The Sound of Music and was seen in the North Shore Music Theatre's production of Fame as well as in shows at the Fulton Opera and EPAC. He is currently starring in Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's Spring Awakening on Broadway, after having created his role Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater.

Spring Awakening has music by Duncan Sheik, lyrics and book by Steven Sater, direction by Michael Mayer and choreography by Bill T. Jones. The musical is based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 expressionist play, which was scandalous in its day for addressing sex, violence and suicide.

Two actors play all the adult roles, and the others in the ensemble cast plays teenagers. Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele play the lead roles of two teens drawn to each other in a world where parents, ministers and teachers create an atmosphere of shame, silence and ignorance.

Spring Awakening began previews at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Nov. 16, 2006, and opened Dec. 10, 2006. Its world premiere was Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company, where it opened June 15, 2006.

The Eugene O'Neill Theatre is at 230 West 49th Street. For more information on the show visit springawakening.com .
