Diva to Die for Shakes It Anew By CHARLES ISHERWOOD
Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Evelyn (Champagne) King, Vicki Sue Robinson, Amii Stewart: the disco era was prime time for divas of pop. But perhaps the flashiest disco diva of them all was actually a man who, aptly enough for a diva of any era, went by a single name. I speak, of course, of Sylvester, the flamboyant androgyne whose life has now become fodder for the latest jukebox musical to splash down onstage. “Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical” is the brainchild of Anthony Wayne (“Pippin,” “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”), who wrote the book, directs with Kendrell Bowman and struts the stage of the Theater at St. Clement’s in the title role. As with many another musical drawing on chart hits, the show will weave Sylvester’s finest booty shakers — “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real),” “Do Ya Wanna Funk,” “Dance (Disco Heat)” — into his life story. And let’s not forget this bonus: The show will feature Anastacia McCleskey and Jacqueline B. Arnold as the Weather Girls. Can we hope for a singalong? (Opens Sunday, 423 West 46th Street, Clinton, 866-811-4111, fabuloussylvester.com.)
