SWIFTLY following opening night at The Regent is an opening number at the Logies for the enthusiastic young cast of Fame The Musical.

Nine of Fame's cast of 30 will dance with singer Gabriella Cilmi at Crown's Palladium for the May 2 TV industry awards telecast.

All nine were recruited for Fame by its director Kelley Abbey on the strength of their performances on the TV show So You Think You Can Dance Australia.

They will squeeze three Logies dance rehearsals into their hectic schedule with choreographer Matt Lee, who plays Bert in the upcoming Melbourne musical Mary Poppins.

In the meantime, they have their own show to perform before its premiere on Wednesday.

Talia Fowler, who plays lead role Iris Kelly in Fame, is looking forward to dressing up and walking the Logies red carpet with fellow dancer Tim "Timomatic" Omaji.

"We are representing the Fame company on the red carpet," she says.

"But for now we are in previews and it's very important to stay focused here."

Fowler, 19, has settled into the dressing room she shares with Catherine Shepherd, who plays Serena Katz (another New York City's School of Performing Arts student).

Fowler says she and other cast members were awestruck at moving in to The Regent Theatre for their first professional show.

"Kelley said she wants us to have the same look on our faces when we first walk on stage into the Fame school as we had when we first walked into The Regent."

On her day off, Fowler returned to The Regent's big stage to practice singing while hearing her voice amplified. She says she has never sung or danced on stage with a microphone.

"I want to get used to what my voice is like amplified when I hold notes and get an echo," Fowler says.

When Talia and the rest of the cast are off stage, they return to their dressing rooms to await their next cue.

With a cast of 30 and props that include an authentic New York taxi together with school tables, chairs and blackboards, there is little standing room in the wings.
