Alex goes to town with dances in the name of Fame

CHOREOGRAPHER Alex Townend is stepping up to the challenge of one of musical theatre’s biggest dance shows.

Just like the hit TV series of the same name, the cast of the stage show Fame! burst into energetic song and dance routines at the drop of a hat.

Alex has been coaching the cast of Todmorden Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society’s production of Fame! in a host of dance styles and is now putting the finishing touches to the numbers.

A long-standing member of the society, Alex has provided choreography for the adult and youth companies and has taken roles in shows such as Mack and Mabel, Sweet Charity, Copacabana and My Fair Lady.

She said: “It’s been probably the most challenging show, in terms of dance, that TAODS has undertaken in a long time.

“It is a fusion of several different styles including contemporary, ballet, street and modern jazz. Then there is also a smattering of Latin American dance like salsa and samba and a whole flamenco number in act two.

“I am really impressed by the enthusiasm and talent of the cast who are working so hard.

“To pull off such a wide range of styles is very difficult, but I’m really looking forward to show week. It’s going to be great!”

Alex is a specialist dance teacher in primary and secondary schools and also teaches at several local dance schools.

Fame! musical director and TAODS vice chairman Helen Clarkson said: “We are so pleased that Alex returned to Todmorden – she is a real talent on and offstage. It’s no surprise that many other societies also engage her for their shows.

“To see her impressive choreography, make sure you book your seat for Fame! at Todmorden Hippodrome this month.”

n Fame, TAODS, Todmorden Hippodrome, April 23 to 27, 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 on Tuesday and Wednesday, and for students on Thursday, all other performances £12, £10 concessions on Thursday and Friday. Visit www.todhip.org or Todmorden Tourist information Centre to book.
