ABT Academy for Young Performers vies for Fame
July 2010
by Joseph Gordon

Arizona Broadway Theatre’s Academy for Young Performers is gearing up to present its summer show, Fame The Musical, based on the 1980 musical film Fame, conceived and developed by David De Silva with a book by Jose Fernandez, music by Steve Margoshes and lyrics by Jacques Levy.

De Silva produced the critically acclaimed, successful film about students at New York City's High School of Performing Arts. Fame was nominated for six Academy Awards and won two, for Original Music Score by Michael Gore and Best Original Song, Fame. The song Out Here On My Own was also nominated for the Academy Award. The movie proved so popular that it spawned a television series that ran for six-seasons. The stage musical is significantly different from the film with almost an entirely new score. The film is still referred to several times in the libretto and in two songs.

Since its first production, Fame The Musical has had numerous professional and amateur productions.

The Academy at the Arizona Broadway Theatre introduces, instills and inspires young people to develop an appreciation for the performing arts through the education and exploration of theatre skills.

Fame The Musical is set during the last years of New York City's celebrated the High School of Performing Arts which was a public alternative high school in New York that existed from 1948 through 1984. It has since been merged into the Fiorello La Guardia High School of Music and Art and the Performing Arts. The Musical tells a bittersweet but ultimately inspiring story of a diverse group of students as they commit to four years of grueling artistic and academic work. Filled with humor and insight, the show explores the issues that confront many young people today. As the famous song suggests, Fame-The Musical is, indeed, "gonna live forever."

The Academy will only perform Fame The Musical for two nights, July 30 and July 31 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $12.00.
